Modernization of electric trains and diesel trains

Modernization of multiple units rolling stock means full or partial rebuilding of a rolling stock unit with or without changing functional tasks and/or load-bearing structures in relation to the given model structures defined by the manufacturer.


When implementing modernization projects, JSC “VRC Zasulauks” pursues 5 main essential tasks:

  1. extension of service life for trains with expired operation time
  2. decrease in operation expenses
  3. improvement of working conditions for the driver
  4. increase in passenger comfort and safety level
  5. increase in passenger traffic efficiency for rail networks with low passenger volume.


The modernization projects comprise the following main elements:

  • conversion of trailers to power heads to decrease the size of trainsets
  • a new interior of passenger area
  • comfortable seats
  • support sliding doors
  • decreased noise level
  • automatic temperature control in passenger area
  • new driver’s cab that meets all ergonomic requirements and is equipped with an air-conditioner
  • new safety equipment
  • electronic speedometers
  • MMKTS system that enables one-man operation of the train ensuring increased safety and operational economy
  • Video surveillance (in passenger area and diesel engine room)
  • Installation of automatic heating system for diesel engine warming up


Regarding the modernization of trains, JSC “VRC Zasulauks” has established a successful cooperation with the stockholder of the Company, JSC “RĪGAS VAGONBŪVES RŪPNĪCA”, and, since 2006, both companies carry out modernization of electric trains and diesel trains. The first and up to now the most significant modernization project with extension of service life of 68 electric train cars was implemented in 2006-2008.
